Pollution in People: Cord Blood Contaminants in Minority Newborns
Environmental Working Group (EWG) in partnership with Rachel’s Network is at it again. This time, their biomonitoring focus was on children of African, Hispanic, and Asian heritage. This report details the first reported detection of 21 contaminants in American newborns, including bisphenol A (BPA). Given that Moms in Canada are exposed to similar contamination sources, one can be sure that Canadian infants are contaminated as well.

Volatile Vinyl: The New Shower Curtain's Chemical Smell
Some five brands of shower curtains, purchased from major retailers in the US like Wal-Mart, Target, Kmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, and Sears, were recently tested for levels of volatile chemicals. As many as 108 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were found to off-gas after the curtains were hung-up.

According to a new study by Environmental Defence, a harmful chemical, bisphenol A, leaches from popular brands of plastic baby bottles found on Canadian store shelves. Bisphenol A, is a known hormone disruptor and is associated with adverse health effects, including breast and prostate cancer, early puberty in girls, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obesity.
