BPA and Other Toxins found in Ottawa River

Recent testing by Ottawa’s Drinking Water Services found bisphenol A (BPA) and another nine chemicals from a list of 51 substances in the Ottawa River. The Ottawa River is the city’s main source of drinking water.
Chemicals detected include perfluorobutane sulfonate, a substance which has been linked to cancer and problems in fertility and development, and lasaloid A, an antibiotic used in the raising of livestock.

Upgrading consumer protection laws in Canada

This past week the Canadian government announced a plan to strengthen consumer protection laws in this country. The Conservatives' new legislative package would amend both the Food and Drugs Act and the Canada Consumer Product Safety Act to give more power to the government on recalls and industry fines.
